Obuasi, a renowned gold mining town in Ghana and precisely the Ashanti Region has been arguably the economic citadel of the nation. Gold mining activities have been perpetuated for over a century and thus making it the economic backbone of the town.

In the year 2015 AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) reduced its footings in Obuasi after over a century of operations in the area. The town almost became a ghost town when it lost its mainstay of the economy, and this called for an intervention to reignite and diversify the local economy.

Subsequently, an Establishment Committee comprising representatives from the Municipal Assembly, AGA, the Traditional Council and KNUST was constituted in the year 2015 to lay the foundation for the commencement of a subsidiary of the University.

In the year 2019 the KNUST under the auspices of Obuasi West Municipal Assembly and AngloGold Ashanti established a new satellite campus in Obuasi at the abandoned AGA Northern Mines site. Since that time, the School has been making frantic efforts to rehabilitate and refurbish the old dilapidated structures to provide the needed infrastructure to support teaching and learning.  The Campus was officially commissioned by the President on the 4th November 2020.

The Management of the Obuasi Campus in collaboration with the Colleges in the Main KNUST Campus facilitate the running of academic programmes.  The new Campus started with eleven academic programmes in 2019.  Presently, fifteen undergraduate programmes (including Seven Engineering Programmes, Four Business Administration Programmes, Three Allied Health Sciences Programmes and One Science Programme) are run on the Campus.  With a foundation student population of 343 in 2019, the Obuasi Campus can now boast of a student population of 1063 made up of 67% male and 33% female as at the 2020/2021 academic year.
